Dull and Boring news
Dull party planned after Boring meeting links
communities
Residents of a tiny Scottish village called Dull are preparing a
party after plans to link their community to an American town
called Boring were given the thumbs up.
Officials from the town in Oregon, USA, last night voted to let
the two places become "sister communities".
The whole plan was hatched by Elizabeth Leighton, who lives near
Dull in Perthshire. While on a cycling holiday in the US, Elizabeth
came upon the town of Boring and thought it would be nice for the
two unfortunately named places to become linked.
She spoke to Dull's community council, who were very keen on the
idea and contacted the Oregon town.
The two communities cannot be twinned because Boring is much
bigger, with 12,000 residents compared to Dull's 84.
Plans in Dull include getting new signs for the entrance to the
village, highlighting the Dull Boring link-up.
Residents in the Perthshire village hope it will bring more
visitors, even if they only come to point and laugh, and take each
other's photos in front of the new sign.
The name Dull comes from Gaelic and is thought to mean "meadow"
or perhaps "snare". It may not have a school, a shop or a pub, but
Dull has historic connections. Its disused church is built on the
site of an early Christian monastery that was established in the
eighth century. It also has a Highland safari company.
Boring is much busier, with cafes, bars and a shop. Home mainly
to farmers, it is named after an American Civil War veteran named
William H Boring.
